New York Indie Cafes #4
Think Coffee

Think Coffee established itself at its flagship location on Mercer Street, in Manhattan near NYU back in 2006. It has since expanded to 11 locations. I’ve been going to Think Coffee for many years and am quite biased. However, I think any coffee lover who samples their products will agree that the beans, production, and roasting are all top notch quality.

One reason I like to patronize this chain is because of their dedication to social change and the unique approach they take. For every coffee farm they buy their beans from, they initiate a project that helps local residents. For example, when they started buying Nicaragua, Santa Isabel coffee, also started a project to bring clean water to the community. Other projects include home restoration, housing construction and women’s health issues.

The other reason, besides consistently great coffee, is the employees, who, beyond simply being good at their job and polite, are cool, interesting people. The overall coffee drinking experience is 100% better in a sympathetic, comfortable environment.

We recently visited one of their branches, located in the Gramercy area of Manhattan. The interior is clean and well-maintained, with high ceilings and retro-style shiny, black banquettes. We tried the Ethiopia Sidamo Kellensoo and Colombia Aponte pour-over coffees this time around.

The Sidamo had all the hallmarks of a beautifully grown, processed, and roasted bean. It was very smooth, had a pronounced blueberry flavor, citrus overtones, and a wine-like finish.

The Aponte beans come from Nariño province, which has produced some great artisan coffee beans. One of Coffee Club’s own selections, roasted by Formula Coffee also comes from Nariño. The coffee has a pronounced grapefruit note with a slight honey-brown sugar finish. It was unexpectedly complex for a Colombian coffee.

When you’re in New York, consider Think Coffee—you may end up coming every day.
