Part I 早期開始
在300多年前，荷蘭人首次在台灣種植咖啡。台灣的咖啡文化可以追溯到1895年至1945年的日據時期，在此期間，無數的咖啡農場開始成形。 戰前台灣殖民地時期，有數十家日本經營的咖啡館，特色是本地種植的咖啡，主要來自雲林的古坑。
日本在第二次世界大戰中的最終失敗，和1949年國民黨的到來，有效扼殺了半個世紀以來，以咖啡作為經濟作物的的發展。 來台的蔣介石和喝茶的隨從用茶園，檳榔和果樹種植取代了幾乎所有的咖啡園。 台灣當時沒有以咖啡聞名，而是成為種植烏龍茶的世界冠軍。

Part I––Early beginnings
While coffee was first planted in Taiwan by the Dutch more than 300 years ago, the beginnings of Taiwan’s coffee culture dates from the time of Japanese occupation, from 1895 to 1945, during which time numerous coffee farms were started. In prewar Colonial Taiwan there were dozens of Japanese-run cafes featuring locally grown coffee, mainly from Gukeng, in Yunlin.
The eventual defeat of Japan in World War II and arrival of the Kuomintang in 1949 effectively killed the development of coffee as a cash crop for half a century. Chiang Kai-shek’s tea-drinking followers from the Mainland replaced almost all the coffee farms with tea plantations, betel nut and fruit tree farms. Instead of gaining renown for its coffee, Taiwan became world champion Oolong tea growers.
While Taiwanese-grown coffee had became a novelty by the 1950s, imported coffee beans and soluble coffee began to make up for these losses, beginning in the late 1970s. By the early 2000s coffee had replaced tea as Taiwan’s most popular drink. Over the past 40 years coffee consumption has increased about 100 fold to over 120 cups/person/year.
